What is the function of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and spinal cord?

Cerebrospinal fluid/CSF:

  1. It is the colorless fluid that resembles the plasma and is located between the arachnoid and pia mater of the meninges of the brain.
  2. It is made up of glucose, proteins, lipids, electrolytes, etc.
  3. It is located in the cerebrospinal canal in the case of the spinal cord and the four ventricles in the case of the brain.

The function of CSF:

  1. The major function of cerebrospinal fluid is to cushion the brain and spinal cord from outer injury and shock and provide nutrients.

Hence, the cerebrospinal fluid nourishes the brain and the spinal cord and protects them from mechanical injury.
