The copper releasing IUDs release copper ions within the female reproductive tract. The copper ions suppress the motility of sperms. As the motility of sperms is suppressed, the sperms are unable to reach the fallopian tube where fertilisation is supposed to take place.

Gametogenesis (formation of gametes) takes place in the gonads and copper releasing IUDs do not interfere with it.

Release of the secondary oocyte due to the rupture of the mature Graafian follicle is called ovulation. Ovulation is not affected by copper releasing IUDs.
