Question

What is the function of DNA polymerase I during DNA replication?

Open in App
Solution

DNA polymerase I:

  1. DNA polymerase I is a DNA polymerase encoded by the pol I gene and is involved in prokaryotic DNA replication.
  2. DNA polymerase I is involved in removing RNA primers in the processing of DNA after replication.
  3. It has three activities that is polymerase, 3'5'exonuclease and 5'3'exonuclease

The function of DNA polymerase I:

  1. DNA polymerase I also fill in the resulting gaps by synthesizing DNA, beginning at the 3' end of the neighboring Okazaki fragment.
  2. In addition to that, it also possesses 3`5`exonuclease activity that aims at proofreading the DNA sequence that has also been replaced by RNA primer.
  3. And this enzyme removes the ribonucleotides one at a time from the 5' end of the primer (5'3'exonuclease)
  4. Pol I is used to repair damaged DNA and is also used in the lab to prepare radiolabeled DNA.
