  1. Ependymal cells are referred to as the ciliated epithelial present on the surface of the ventricles of the brain and spinal canal.
  2. They are produced by radial glia.

Functions of ependymal cells:

  1. They play a crucial role in the synthesis of cerebrospinal fluid.
  2. It performs a supporting function for progenitor cells.
  3. They perform protective functions for the brain and spinal cord but they are themselves susceptible to various viruses.
  4. For mediating osmotic regulation of the Brain, they distinguish cerebrospinal fluid from parenchymatous cells of the brain.
  5. They play an important role in the Central Nervous System.
