Solution

Heterocysts:

  1. Heterocysts is a thick wall cells found in cyanobacteria (Blue-green algae).
  2. The cell is present in an algae filament where nitrogen fixation takes place.
  3. For example, Nostoc.

The function of Heterocyst:

  1. They produce nitrogenase which is the main enzyme in nitrogen fixation.
  2. It produces an additional cell wall that acts as a barrier for oxygen and helps in creating a micro anaerobic environment.
  3. They degrade photosynthesis II, which produces oxygen.
  4. The up-regulate glycolytic enzymes.
  5. It contains polar plugs composed of cyanophycin which slows down cell-to-cell diffusion.
