Large intestine:

  1. The tubular structure present after the small intestine is the large intestine.
  2. The large intestine has four parts: cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal.
  3. Partly digested food moves through the cecum into the colon, where water and some nutrients and electrolytes are removed.
  4. Colon comprises of four parts namely, the ascending colon, transverse, colon, descending colon and the sigmoid colon.

Functions:

  1. Reabsorption of water and mineral ions such as sodium and chloride.
  2. Formation and storage of faeces.
  3. Maintaining a resident population of over 500 species of bacteria that are mostly beneficial to the digestion.
  4. Bacterial fermentation of indigestible materials inside the colon.
