Lateral Meristems :

  1. This type of meristem is present along the longitudinal axis of the stem and root and is called lateral meristem.
  2. It is also called a secondary meristem.

Functions of lateral meristems :

  1. The cells of the lateral meristem increase in number by dividing and help in the thickening of the stem and root.
  2. Vascular cambium is a type of lateral meristem that forms the xylem and phloem.
  3. Cork cambium is a type of lateral meristem that forms the cork.
  4. An increase in the vascular and cork tissue increases the girth of the plant.
