Question

What is the function of leghemoglobin in the root nodules of legumes?

Open in App
Solution

Functions of Leghaemoglobin:

  1. The root nodules of leguminous plants contain the enzyme nitrogenase and a pink-coloured pigment leghemoglobin.
  2. The nitrogenase enzyme is responsible for converting atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia.
  3. However, the nitrogenase enzyme is extremely sensitive to oxygen and hence, works only in anaerobic conditions.
  4. The leghemoglobin acts as an oxygen scavenger, provides anaerobic conditions for the nitrogenase enzyme and protects the enzyme from inactivation.
