What is the function of mucus in the stomach?

Open in App
Solution

Stomach: It is a J-shaped pouch that receives the bolus and the stomach releases HCl which activates the pepsin enzyme in the stomach and breaks down the proteins.
Here, the food is mixed with water, and chyme is formed.

Mucus:

  1. The mucus is released by the inner cells of the stomach.
  2. This mucous is highly important for us as it acts as a protective layer for the stomach against its own secreted enzymes and acids.
  3. The highly corrosive HCl can damage the inner cells of the stomach and also the pepsin that is released can be digest cells of the stomach wall hence mucus lining restricts such substances from coming in contact with the walls of the stomach.
