  1. Nucellus is the mass of parenchymatous tissue which is surrounded by the integumentary layers in an ovule.
  2. It is the central part of an ovule that encloses the embryo sac i.e., the female gametophyte.

Function of nucellus:

  1. It has abundant food reserves and thus, acts as the nutritive tissue for the developing embryo.
  2. Nucellus forms the perisperm in some seeds after fertilization such as beet and black pepper.
