  3. They allow water to flow into the mouth and out the pharyngeal slits in this position.
  4. Chordates have slits in their pharyngeal gills.
  5. These slits are utilized by primitive chordates to filter food particles from the water.
  6. The slits of fish and some amphibians have gills and are used for gas exchange.
  7. Filter eating and respiration are aided by pharyngeal slits.
