What is the function of the epiglottis?
To prevent food from entering the wind-pipe.
The upper opening of the wind-pipe is guarded by a muscular flap epiglottis. The epiglottis is responsible for closing the windpipe at the time of swallowing food. If the epiglottis does not close completely, the food may enter the wind-pipe and result in coughing and even choking.
