What is the function of valves in human heart?

Solution

Heart valves

Heart valves are the flap-like structures that guard the openings between the atria and the ventricles. These are also present at the openings of major arteries and veins in the heart and ensure blood flow in one direction and prevent the backflow of blood. The three major valves found in the human heart are:

  • Tricuspid valve (guards the opening between the right atrium and right ventricle)
  • Bicuspid valve or Mitral valve (guards the opening between the left atrium and left ventricle)
  • Semilunar valve (present at the opening of pulmonary artery and aorta)

Thus, the function of the valves in the human heart is to prevent the backward flow of blood and ensure its flow in one direction.
