Question

What is the function of waxy-coating of lotus leaves?

Open in App
Solution

The waxy coating has three functions.
The coating helps keep lotus leaves from drying out,
it protects needles from being damaged by winter temperatures,
and the waxy coating helps the lotus keep many of their leaves all year.
The lotus leaves have nanostructures on their surfaces. These nanostructures are coated with hydrophobic wax crystals approximately 1 nm in diameter. This makes the surface at the nanoscale quite rough. This rough surface is more hydrophobic than a smooth surface would be.
