The general formula is 2n^2.
Thus
shell1 can accomodate 2*1^1=2 electrons
shell 2 can 2*2^2=8 electrons
shell 3 can 2*3^2=18 electrons
shell 4 can accomodate 2*4^2=32
shell5 can 2*5^2 =50 electrons and so on
