What is the general formula of alkenes?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1:

The organic compounds consisting of Carbon (C) and Hydrogen (H) atoms are known as hydrocarbons.

Hydrocarbons are of two types depending upon the kind of bonds formed between Carbon-Carbon atoms:

  1. Saturated hydrocarbons
  2. Unsaturated hydrocarbons

Step 2:

The organic compounds containing Carbon atoms having triple and double between two Carbon atoms are called unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Alkenes contain double bonds between the Carbon atoms so it is an unsaturated hydrocarbon.

Alkenes have the general formula of (CnH2n).

Example: Ethene (C2H4) is an alkene having the formula is(C2H2x2).
