Solution

A chemistry laboratory generally has the following facilities.

  1. Workbenches at which two or three people can work are present.
  2. Each bench has stand for holding common chemicals in bottles, a gas burner, and a sink.
  3. Special chemicals and concentrated acids are stored on a separate shelf.
  4. Balances for weighing chemicals are kept in a separate room or area.
  5. A fume cupboard is used to keep substances that give off fumes.

Apparatus-
Different types of equipment are used in a laboratory. The items used for storing and handling chemicals are called apparatuses. Some of the kinds are:

  1. apparatuses for storing, heating, or cooling chemicals
  2. apparatuses for measuring
  3. apparatuses for stirring, transferring or covering chemicals apparatuses for supporting or holding.

Most of the apparatuses in which chemicals are taken are made of glass.

The reasons are as follows.

  1. Glass is transparent, so we can see what is happening inside.
  2. Glass can be washed thoroughly. Glass does not react with most chemicals.
  3. Glass withstands both high and low temperatures.
  4. Glass can be formed easily into whatever size and shape is required.

Some apparatus used in chemistry laboratory are:

NameDescriptionUse
test tubea glass tube open at one end and rounded at the otherto study or heat small quantities of reagents
beakermade of glass, is of different sizes and has a rim and a spoutto mix, stir and heat reagents
round-bottom flask (Florence flask) has a narrow neck and a round bodyto mix or heat reacting liquids, can be swirled without spilling the contents
conical flaskhas a narrow neck and triangular bodyto mix large quantities of reagents without spilling the contents.
china dishmade of porcelain and is of different sizesto evaporate liquids
glass trougha round, oval or square glass containerto hold large quantity of liquid
reagent bottlea bottle made of clear or coloured glass; it can be closed with a stopperto store reagents.
