Question

What is the genetic nature of apomictic embryos? Can they be called Clones?

Open in App
Solution

There are some chances when cell divisions (mitotic and meiotic) do not occur properly which leads to the formation of diploid eggs. This diploid egg further develops into a new organism.

Due to the absence of fertilization in them, these embryos have exact copies of the genetic makeup similar to the parent organism.

These embryos are called apomictic embryos which are genetically similar and yes they can be called as clones due to resemblance in genetic makeup.
