Hormones:

Hormone that triggers ovulation:

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH):

  1. FSH is a pituitary hormone that regulates growth, sexual development, and reproduction, including menstruation, follicular development, and ovulation.
  2. In males, FSH induces Sertoli cells to secrete inhibin and it stimulates the formation of Sertoli -Sertoli tight junctions (zonula occludens).
  3. Sertoli cells release peptide hormone which slows FSH production.

Luteinizing hormone (LH):

  1. LH is a hormone produced by the gonadotropic cells of the anterior pituitary gland.
  2. In women, an acute increase in LH stimulates ovulation and corpus luteum development.
  3. In males, LH is also known as interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH), it stimulates the production of testosterone by Leydig cells.
  4. It works synergistically with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
