Question

What is the hybridisation in the central atom of H3O+?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Formula used for calculation:

  • Hybridization=12V+M-C+A
  • Where V is the number of valence electrons of the central atom, M is the monovalent atoms attached to the central atom, C is the positive charge, and Arepresents the negative charge.

Step 2: Calculation of hybridization of Hydronium ion H3O+:

  • The central atom in H3O+ is O. The atomic number of O is 8 so its electronic configuration is 1s22s22p4.
  • So O has 6 valence electrons and there are 3 monovalent H atoms attached to it.
  • So, the hybridization of H3O+ =126+3-1+0=4
  • The hybridization number is 4 thus the hybridization of H3O+is sp3.
  • The geometry of H3O+ is trigonal pyramidal due to the presence of one lone pair of electrons.

Hence, the hybridisation in the central atom of H3O+ is sp3.
