What is the hybridization and geometry of \(SF_4\) ?
From the Lewis structure of the molecle, how many bond pairs and lone pairs surround the central Sulphur atom? The central atom in Sulphur tetrafluoride molecule has 10 electrons. There are 4 bond pairs and one single lone pair. Hence the steric number is 5. Using VSEPR theory, we can predict the shape and geometry of the molecule. Clearly, SF4 has a trigonal bipyramidal geometry (or structure). The lone pair is in the equatorial plane giving an overall see-saw shape.
