Question

What is the importance of longitude

Open in App
Solution

Lines of latitude and longitude play a crucial role: the precise position of every site on the planet can only be determined by the latitude and longitude of that location. The pattern of wind circulation on the world surface may also be understood using latitude.

The longitude lines travel north and south. They are used to determine a location’s East-West position on the earth. They are parallel to the Equator and the latitude lines. In one day, the Earth revolves one full revolution (360o of longitude). As a result, it rotates one degree of longitude every 1/360th of a day, or four minutes.
