Solution
The BOD is an important parameter for assessing water quality. It deals with the amount of oxygen consumption by aerobic biological organisms to oxidize organic compounds. Sewage with high BOD can cause a decrease in oxygen of receiving waters, which in turn can cause the death of oxygen dependent organisms.
The amount of BOD in the water is a measure of the amount of organic material in the water, in terms of how much oxygen will be required to break it down biologically. Clean water would have a BOD value of less than 5 ppm whereas highly polluted water could have a BOD value of 12-17 ppm or more.Because of given reasons measuring BOD is important for all living organisms in water.
