What is the importance of roads in the Ladakh region?

The rugged terrain of Ladakh makes the development of transportation facilities very difficult. Roads are important since railways have not reached Ladakh and air travel is limited to Leh. There are only a few motorable roads in Ladakh. Leh is the nodal centre from where highways connect it to the Kashmir Valley and to Manali in Himachal Pradesh.
