Question

What is the importance of semipermeable membrane in osmosis?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Semipermeable membranes, also known as selectively permeable membranes or partially permeable membranes, allow some molecules or ions to diffuse through. Osmosis moves only water over a membrane, whereas diffusion transports materials across membranes and within cells.
  2. This is important for the survival of cells. Solvent molecules (typically water) flow from one side of a cell membrane to the other by osmosis. This occurs when the concentration of a solute is higher on one side than the other.
