The outside micrometer's zero reading (minimum range) when measured with a micrometer is
When the spindle and anvil of the micrometer screw gauge are brought together, the zero on the main scale should correspond to a zero on the circular scale.
However, if the two zeros do not coincide due to wear and tear or a manufacturing defect, the vernier is said to have zero error. Zero errors are classified into two types.
Positive zero error occurs when the thimble scale's marking is below the main scale's horizontal reference line.
Negative zero error occurs when the thimble scale's marking is above the main scale's horizontal reference line.
