What is the interphase of the cell cycle?

Open in App
Solution

Interphase

  1. This phase was believed to indicate the resting phase between consequent cell divisions.
  2. However, new studies indicate that it is a highly active phase.
  3. Further, the interphase comprises the following stages –
  • G0 Phase or the Resting Phase – cells neither participate in division nor prepares themselves for the same
  • G1 Phase or Gap 1: cells are metabolically active
  • S phase or Synthesis: DNA synthesis or replication occurs
  • G2 phase or Gap 2: Protein synthesis occurs
  • Quiescent Stage : cells that do not experience division further and come out of the G1 phase and enter an inactive stage
