Question
What Is The Last Stage Of Gametophyte Generation?
Open in App
Solution
The gametophyte generation starts with the formation of spores produced by meiosis (reductional division).
The spores are haploid and all the cells derived from it (by mitosis) are also haploid.
In the meanwhile time, this multicellular structure produces gametes by mitosis (equational division).
Then by sexual reproduction, these gametes produce the diploid sporophyte generation.
The sporophyte generation thus starts with a zygote. Cells of this generation contain the diploid number of chromosomes.
Certain cells after some time undergo meiosis and form spores, starting a new gametophyte generation.
Thus,
the last stage of gametophyte generation is gametes.
