What is the life cycle of fungi?

Open in App
Solution

Fungi:

  1. They are the eukaryotic, saprozoic heterotrophic organisms that exist in different shapes and sizes.
  2. The fungi reproduces sexually and have alternating haploid and diploid phases.

1.Haploid stage

  1. This is the first stage in the life cycle of a fungus.
  2. Here the haploid spores produced from zygote germinate to produce haploid mycelia.
  3. Haploid hyphae produce gametes, which fuse by plasmogamy and karyogamy to produce diploid zygote.

2.Diploid stage

  1. The well grown haploid mycelium encounters another fungi, which fuses together to form a diploid zygote.
  2. Zygote undergoes meiosis and produces haploid spores.
  3. Generally, zygote is the only diploid stage in the life cycle of fungi.
