Question

What is the light-harvesting complex?

Open in App
Solution

Light reactions:

  1. These are the reactions that include absorption of light, splitting of water, releasing oxygen, and the formation of ATP and NADPH.
  2. The pigments that absorb the light are present in a light-harvesting complex within photosystem I and photosystem II

Light-harvesting complex:

  1. The LHC is a complex composed of a large number of pigment molecules bound to proteins
  2. The function of the light energy complex is to trap the light and transfer it to reaction centers or photosystems, where absorbed light energy is converted into chemical energy.

The light-harvesting complex is composed of:

  1. Core complex: The complex contains about 40-60 chlorophyll pigment molecules.
  2. Antenna complex: The complex contains many pigments that absorb the light at different wavelengths and transfer the absorbed light energy to the core complex which further transfers to the reaction center.
  3. The reaction center in photosystem I, where chlorophyll pigment absorbs light of a wavelength of 700nm.
  4. The reaction center in photosystem II, where chlorophyll pigment absorbs light of a wavelength of 680nm.
