Question

What is the main difference between complex 1 and complex 2?

Solution

Electron Transport System:

  1. The metabolic pathway of electron transport is called as electron transport system or ETS.
  2. It is a series of protein compounds where it makes use of electrons from electron carrier to develop a chemical gradient.
  3. It leads to the creation of ATP in a complete system named oxidative phosphorylation.
  4. The compound ubiquinone combines first and second complexes.
  5. Both complex I and complex II transfer electrons to ubiquinone, which in turn transfers the electrons to complex III.
Complex I of ETS Complex II of ETS
1. Complex I is NADH dehydrogenase. 1. Complex II is succinate dehydrogenase.
2. It accepts high energy electrons from NADH and pumps 4 protons from the matrix to the intermembrane space.2. It converts succinate to fumarate and generates FADH2 in the Krebs cycle.
3. The two electrons are carried to the first complex aboard NADH.3. It directly gets FADH2 and the two electrons from complex I and delivers it to ETS.
