Cytokinins are adenine derivates found in the plant roots and seed endosperm. It was initially isolated from coconut milk.
Examples of cytokinins include kinetin and zeatin.
Functions of cytokinins:
Cytokinins along with auxins modulate cell division and differentiation in plants. Equal concentrations promote cell division but do not allow cell differentiation.
A relatively higher cytokinin concentration results in the formation of shoot buds. A relatively lower concentration with respect to auxin results in the development of roots.
Cytokinins promote lateral bud growth.
Cytokinins also enhance the level of protein synthesis in leaves, keeping them greener for a long time, thereby delaying ageing.
