Gluconeogenesis:

  1. Gluconeogenesis is the process by which glucose is produced from noncarbohydrate sources such as glucogenic amino acids, glycerol, etc.

Functions of Gluconeogenesis:

  1. It occurs when dietary intake of carbohydrate is low or at the time of fasting to maintain glucose level.
  2. Non-carbohydrate sources are first converted to pyruvate or other intermediates of glycolysis.
  3. Some cells in our body such as erythrocytes and brain cells primarily utilise glucose as the energy source.
  4. Gluconeogenesis mainly occurs in the liver.
