Plasma membrane

Solution

Plasma membrane-

The plasma membrane is the selectively permeable, outermost covering of all cells. It separates the cell contents from the external environment.

Functions of plasma membrane:

  1. It binds the semi-fluid content of the cell and gives it a definite shape.
  2. It functions as a mechanical barrier, protects cell contents, and maintains the internal environment of the cell.
  3. Being selectively permeable, the plasma membrane permits only certain selected substances to pass through.
  4. Because of flexibility, the plasma membrane enables the cell to engulf large molecules and food particles.
