Pathway for water conservation in angiosperms:

  1. During the translocation of sugars such as glucose is first converted to fructose, then to sucrose into the phloem sieve tube cells, producing a hypertonic condition in the phloem, which leads to the flow of water into the adjacent xylem by osmosis.
  2. As the osmotic pressure builds up the phloem sap moves to areas with lower osmotic pressure.
  3. The sugar molecule sucrose is actively transported and removed as complex carbohydrates, thus the loss of solute creates a high water potential in the phloem, leading to the release of water back into xylem vessels.
