Major drawbacks for cotton industry in India includes:
(i) India share in the world trade of cotton yarn is huge compared to its trade in readymade garments which is less that is only 4 percent.
(ii) India's spinning mills are advanced and can compete at the global level.It has the capacity of using all the fibres produced. But the weaving, knitting and processing units are not capable of using the high quality yarn.
(iii) There exists some big factories of cotton production but most of the production is in scattered small units, which is mainly concentrated to the local market.
Yes, India is one of the largest producer and exporter of cotton in India.
