What is the major problem faced in fish farming? How can it be overcomes?
1) Both local and imported fish species are used in composite fish culture. In this system, a combination of five or six fish species, having different types of food habits, is used in a single fishpond. Therefore these species do not compete for food among them. Hence, the food from all the parts of the pond is utilised. The Catlas are surface feeders, Rohus feed in the middle-zone of the pond, Mrigals and Common Carps are bottom feeders, and Grass Carps feed on the weeds, together these species can use all the food in the pond without competing with each other. 2) The major problem in composite fish culture is that many of these fish breed only during monsoon. This problem can be overcome by breeding these fish using hormonal stimulation. 3) Besides fish farming,bee-keeping needs low investments and farmers can use it for an additional income. |
