Law of conservation of mass:

  1. It was given by Antoine Laurent Lavoisier in 1789.
  2. According to him during chemical reaction in an isolated system mass can neither be created nor be destroyed it gets transformed from one form of matter to another.
  3. Mass of reactants =Mass of products
  4. Reaction:

C(s)+O2(g)heatCO2(g)

Carbon Oxygen Carbon dioxide

Given;(C=12amu,O=16amu)

Step 1. Calculate the mass of all the elements and compounds involved in a reaction.

i. Mass of C =12amu

ii. Mass of O2 =2x Mass of O

=2 + 16amu

=32amu

iii. Mass of CO2 =Mass of C + 2x mass of O

=12 + 2x16

=12 + 32

=44amu

Step 2. Equate mass of reactants and products.

Mass of reactants =Mass of products

Mass of C +Mass of O2 = Mass of CO2

12amu + 32amu =44amu

44amu=44amu

Thus, the mass of CO2 is 44amu.

The correct answer is option B.
