The maximum number of electrons in a shell is given by 2n2.

where 'n' is the principal quantum number.

Shell and ‘n’ value

Maximum electrons in the electron configuration

K shell, n=12 ✕ 12 = 2
L shell, n=22 ✕ 22 = 8
M shell, n=32 ✕ 32 = 18
N shell, n=42 ✕ 42 = 32

(i) For the N shell: the principal quantum number(n) is 4.

The maximum number of electrons in the N shell is given by 2×(4)2=2×16=32.

(ii) For the 6th orbit: the principal quantum number(n) is 6.

The maximum number of electrons in the 6th orbit is given by 2×(6)2=2×36=72.
