Question

What is the maximum possible sound level in dB of sound waves in air ? Given that density of air is 1.3×105N/m2,ν=332m/s and the atmospheric pressure P=1.01×105N/m2 .

Solution

For maximum possible sound intensity , maximum pressure amplitude of wave can be at most equal to atmospheric pressure . So , we have ,
Δp0=p=1.01×105N/m2
I=Δp202ρv=(1.01×105)22×1.3×332=1.18×107Wm2
Thus loudness level is
L=10log(II0)=log10(1071012)=190dB
