  1. Halogens are the chemical elements that are present in the 17th group of periodic table.
  2. Halogen is derived from the Greek word “Halo” which means salts and “gen” which means formation.
  3. As the name suggest they are helpful in generating salts with metals.
  4. The elements are as follows: Fluorine(F), Chlorine(Cl), Bromine(Br), Iodine(I), and Astatine(At).
  5. All the halogens are nonmetallic in nature.
  6. Fluorine is the most electronegative atom.
  7. The electronegativity of halogens will decrease down the group.
  8. The atomic radius increases as we move from top to bottom in the group.
  9. Example: Formation of salts: Sodium metals react with chlorine to form Sodium chloride salt.
