Question

What is the meaning of the term 'frequency' of an alternating current? What is its value in India? Why is the alternating current considered advantageous over direct current for long-range transmission of electric energy?

Solution

Concept Used: Alternating and Direct Current

Step 1: Frequency of an alternating current:

Frequency is the rate at which current changes direction per second. The frequency of an alternating current is the number of cycles completed per unit second.

Step 2: Value of frequency of AC in India:

In India, the frequency of an AC current is 50 Hz.

Step 3: Alternating Current is advantageous over direct current :

  1. AC power can be easily stepped up or stepped down using transformers, but DC requires complex circuits.
  2. There will be negligible electric power loss for long-range transmission of electric energy in alternating current, compared to direct current.

Hence, alternating current is considered to be advantageous over direct current for long-range transmission.
