Urbanisation can be understood as enhancement of proportion of population in the urban areas like cities and towns as compared to the rural sector.

After independence, the rural economy of India was transformed into mixed economy leading to the large growth of cities. Sometimes urbanisation is understood as growth of concrete jungle and the rural sector is equated with living in the countryside.
