Question

What is the melting point of iron and aluminium? How is iron melted?

Open in App
Solution

MP of iron = 1,538 C
MP of aluminium = 660.3 C
Since iron has a very high melting point (~1500^\circ ~C) so whether it will melt or not will depend upon the core temperature of the flame being used for the purpose. For example a candle flame never exceeds 1400 C so, iron won't melt with a candle flame. However and the oxy-acetalene flame has a much higher temperature and can easily melt iron. Also, it is dependent on heat transfer conditions and the size of the iron object being melted.
