Open in App
Solution

Middle lamella:

  1. Middle lamella is a pectin layer made up of calcium and magnesium pectate.
  2. Middle lamella is present in the plant cells and develops from the cell plate during cytokinesis.
  3. The cell plate that is formed during cell division itself develops into middle lamella or lamellum.

Functions of middle lamella:

  1. Middle lamella acts as a cementing layer between the cell wall of two adjoining cells.
  2. This gives plants stability, and allows for plants to form plasmodesmata between cells.

Thus, middle lamella is involved in joining of the cell walls of two cells.
