Question

What is the minimum energy which a gamma ray photon must possess in order to produce electron-positron pair?

Open in App
Solution

Rest mass of energy of an electron or a positron is 0.51 MeV.
Thus total energy required to produce electron-positron pair is equal to 1.02 MeV.
So, two gamma ray photon each having energy 0.51 MeV combine to produce electron-positron pair. Two gamma rays are required in order to conserve the linear momentum of the electron-positron system.
