Question

What is the moment of inertia in a thin hollow sphere touching the edge (tangent)???

Open in App
Solution

moment of inertia of hollow sphere=2/3MR^2
therefore by parallel axis theorem
moment of inertia of hollow sphere along a tangent passing touching its edge is=2/3MR^2+Mx^2
where x =radius(R)=distance from central axis to the tangent
therefore moment of inertia of hollow sphere along a tangent passing touching its edge is =2/3MR^2+Mx^2
=5/3MR^2
