The mature follicle also called the Graafian follicle in the human female ovary ready to ovulate ranges between 18 - 20 mm in diameter.
In the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, the primordial follicles enlarge to become primary follicles of size 2-5 mm in diameter among which 3-10 dominant follicles are selected and develop into 5-10 mm large secondary follicles.
Among secondary follicles, a dominant follicle is selected.
The 10 mm diameter follicle dominates and suppresses the growth of all other growing follicles and thus it is designated to ovulate.
The dominant follicle starts growing at a double rate under follicular stimulating hormone (FSH)to attain a size of 18-20 mm diameter and is known as a Graafian follicle.
