What is the most important role of fruits?
To attract animals which will help in dispersal of seeds
If a plant were to drop all of its seeds right below itself, the seeds would be in competition for the very resources. By dispersing the seeds over a large area, a parent plant gives the seeds a greater chance at finding space and untapped resources. With those advantages, the seeds stand a much better chance at survival. Fruits have a very important role in seed dispersal. The structure of a fruit often facilitates the dispersal of its seeds. The "wings" of the maple, elm fruits and the "parachutes" of the dandelion and the thistle are blown by the wind; burdock, cocklebur, and carrot fruits have barbs or hooks that cling to fur and clothing; and the buoyant coconut may float thousands of miles from its parent tree. Some fruits explode at maturity, scattering their seeds.Fruits are consumed by man, birds and animals equally. During this process, they consume the seeds which is later excreted by the animal. This helps in the dispersal of the seeds. Birds carry the seeds as they fly and aid in dispersal of seeds to far off places.
