What is the name of the indicator which can be used for testing the pH of a solution ?
A pH indicator is a halochromic chemical compound added in small amounts to a solution so the pH(acidity or basicity ) of the solution can be determined visually.
Now a halochromic material is a substance that changes colour when pH changes occur. The term 'chromic' is defined as materials that can change colour reversibly with the presence of a factor. In this case, the factor is pH. All pH indicators have this property.
Hence, a pH indicator is a chemical detector which detects hydronium ions (H3O+) or hydrogen ions (H+) in the Arrhenius model.
